Prime Fitness: The Machines That Let You Change the Strength Curve

7 min readโ€ขUpdated November 2026

Short answer

Prime Fitness is an American strength equipment brand whose machines let you change the resistance curve. Its SmartStrength system, a SmartCam on selectorised machines and a three-peg Torque Arm on plate-loaded ones, lets you choose whether an exercise is hardest when the muscle is stretched, in the middle or when it is shortened. That makes Prime popular with evidence-led lifters training for muscle growth. Filter the GymMaps map by Brands, then Prime Fitness, to find it.

The idea behind Prime

Every machine has a resistance curve: the way the effort changes from the start of a rep to the end. On most machines the curve is fixed by the shape of the cam or the angle of the lever. Primeโ€™s idea was to make that curve something you can change.

According to trade press, Prime launched in late 2013 at the Club Industry show in Chicago, after its parent company, Specialty Fitness Systems, acquired STRIVE Strength. It describes its equipment as 100% made in the USA.

How SmartStrength works

SmartCam on selectorised machines

On Primeโ€™s pin-loaded machines, the SmartCam is an adjustable cam. Change the setting and you change where the machine is hardest. Primeโ€™s arm curl, for example, has five settings, from peak load in the middle of the rep to peak load in the shortened or lengthened position.

Torque Arm on plate-loaded machines

The plate-loaded machines use a Torque Arm with three pegs. Where you load the plates changes the curve. Same machine, same plates, a different exercise.

Why that matters

Many lifters now want more load in the stretched position, where a muscle is at its longest, because of growing interest in lengthened-position training for muscle growth. Others want the squeeze at the top, or need to reduce load at a painful joint angle. Prime lets one machine do all of that, which is why it has a strong following among evidence-led coaches and lifters.

Prime product lines

  • Evolution: the newer-generation selectorised line.
  • Legacy: the original selectorised line.
  • Hybrid: the Evolution look on the Legacy frame, with the original SmartCam.
  • Plate Loaded: the Torque Arm machines, including the Plate Loaded Pendulum Squat.

Prime also makes the Prodigy Smart Arm. If you are working around a missing machine at your gym, our hack squat alternatives guide has options.

How to find a gym with Prime Fitness equipment

Brand matters more than most people think. The same exercise can feel completely different on two machines, and if you have built your training around one brand at home, a gym full of it abroad means you can pick up exactly where you left off.

  1. Open GymMaps and go to the map.
  2. Tap Filters and scroll to Brands.
  3. Select Prime Fitness. The map now only shows gyms where members have tagged Prime Fitness equipment.
  4. Open a gym to see photos of the actual machines, the full equipment list and day pass prices.

Equipment lists come from the GymMaps community, so if you train somewhere with Prime Fitness kit that is not listed yet, add it. It takes a minute and earns you points.

The short version: Prime is the brand for lifters who care about how a rep feels from start to finish. Being able to move the hardest point of an exercise is genuinely useful, and rare. Use the GymMaps Brands filter to find a gym with Prime before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

What is Prime SmartStrength?

SmartStrength is Primeโ€™s system for changing a machineโ€™s resistance curve. On selectorised machines it uses an adjustable cam called the SmartCam. On plate-loaded machines it uses a Torque Arm with three pegs. Either way, you choose whether the exercise is hardest at the start, middle or end of the movement.

Why would you want to change the strength curve?

Different goals suit different curves. Loading the stretched (lengthened) position is popular for muscle growth, while loading the shortened position emphasises the squeeze. Being able to switch on one machine lets you match the exercise to your goal, your strength profile or an injury.

Where is Prime Fitness equipment made?

In the United States. Prime describes its equipment as 100% made in the USA, reportedly in north-western Pennsylvania.

When did Prime Fitness start?

Trade press reports that Prime launched in late 2013 at the Club Industry show in Chicago, after its parent company acquired STRIVE Strength.

What is the difference between Prime Evolution, Legacy and Hybrid?
