Short answer

gym80 is a German strength equipment maker founded in 1980 in Gelsenkirchen, where it still builds everything. You can recognise it by its thick oval steel tubing. The lines to look for are Pure Kraft and Pure Kraft Strong (plate-loaded) and Sygnum (selectorised). It is part of RSG Group, owner of McFIT and Gold’s Gym, so it is common across Europe. Filter the GymMaps map by Brands, then Gym80, to find it.

From a school basement to 60,000 m²

The name says when it started: 1980. According to German press interviews, the story begins with Walter Herden, a bodybuilder who worked as caretaker at a school in Gelsenkirchen and started building training equipment in its basement.

Gelsenkirchen is in the Ruhr, Germany’s old industrial heartland of coal and steel, and gym80 has stayed there. Today it describes its machines as 100% made in Germany, built on more than 60,000 m² of production space.

Its big break into mainstream gyms came through McFIT. When the first McFIT opened in Würzburg in 1997, it was fitted out with gym80, and gym80 is now part of the same company, RSG Group. That is why so many European gyms have it. Close to home, gym80 is also an official partner of FC Schalke 04, Gelsenkirchen’s football club.

Why lifters rate gym80

The oval tube

gym80 frames are built from a distinctive oval steel tube with 4 mm walls. It is the brand’s visual signature, and it is part of why the machines feel so solid under heavy loads. Once you know what to look for, you can spot gym80 across a gym floor.

Plate-loaded machines for heavy training

The Pure Kraft range is what hardcore gyms buy. These plate-loaded machines are made to take serious weight, and Pure Kraft Strong goes heavier still. If you like Hammer Strength, gym80 Pure Kraft is the closest European equivalent, with its own feel.

Built to order

gym80 offers custom colours, upholstery and logos, so gyms can match the machines to their brand. That is why two gym80 floors can look quite different.

gym80 product lines explained
