Short answer
Stay in Legian if you want to train: The Flash Gym (sauna, ice bath, pool, from about IDR 100,000) and Hammerhead (air conditioning and free lockers, IDR 100,000, or 80,000 at happy hour) are a 10-minute walk apart. The Bar on Sunset Road is the serious strength gym at IDR 160,000, with FIT HUB next door. Kuta is 15 to 30 minutes from the airport, the closest of any beach area.
Kuta is where most people first meet Bali: the closest beach to the airport, surf schools on the sand, and cheap hotels and bars in the lanes behind. Legian runs straight on to the north, and Sunset Road cuts inland between Kuta and Seminyak. The gyms are fewer than in Canggu or Seminyak, but the good ones are cheap and close together.
This guide covers Kuta, Legian and Tuban only. For the rest of the island, see our Bali gym guide, or the area guides for Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu.

Kuta's Areas: Pick the One Your Gym Is In
Kuta, Legian and Tuban run into each other along the same stretch of beach, from the airport in the south to Seminyak in the north. The traffic is heavy, so staying near your gym saves a lot of time.
The areas, north to south
Legian: North of Kuta, a little calmer, with bars and hotels between the beach and Jl. Legian. The Flash Gym and Hammerhead are both here.
Sunset Road: The fast inland road between Kuta and Seminyak, lined with shops and big-box stores. The Bar and FIT HUB sit side by side.
Kuta Beach and Poppies: The busy heart of Kuta: the beach, the surf schools and the Poppies lanes behind them. Lively, cheap and noisy at night.
Tuban and Kubu Anyar: South Kuta towards the airport, with the big malls and family hotels. Dewa Fitness Platinum is here.
The airport: Ngurah Rai International, 15 to 30 minutes from Kuta by road. No other part of Bali is closer.

Getting Around Kuta
Kuta is flat and compact, but the streets are narrow, the pavements are patchy and the traffic is some of the worst in Bali. Walk inside Legian; ride for anything further.
Walking times between gyms
| Route | Distance | On foot |
|---|---|---|
| The Bar โ FIT HUB Sunset Road | 0.2 km | 3 min |

๐ฑ Gojek and Grab
Kuta has more drivers than anywhere else in Bali, so a bike taxi usually turns up in a few minutes and costs very little. A bike taxi is often faster than a car here, because it can get through the traffic.
๐ต Scooters
Easy to rent, but Kuta's one-way loops and traffic are hard work for a first-time rider. You need an international driving permit that covers motorbikes for your travel insurance to pay out.
How long it takes by road

Distances from Mapbox route data. Times allow for typical traffic; evenings and weekends can be slower.
When to Go: Dry Season vs Wet Season
โ๏ธ April to October: dry season
Sunny and less humid, with good beginner surf on Kuta Beach. July and August are the busiest months, along with the weeks around Christmas and New Year.
๐ง๏ธ November to March: wet season
Hot and humid, with heavy downpours that usually come in bursts. Hotels are cheaper, and the air-conditioned gyms carry on as normal.
Before you book:Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, usually falls in March. For 24 hours the island shuts down, including the airport and every gym, and you have to stay in your accommodation. Every foreign visitor also pays a one-off tourist levy of IDR 150,000, which you can pay in advance through the official Love Bali website.
