FITNESS RESORTS

Fitness Resorts Worth Booking: 6 Upmarket Resorts Built Around Training

11 min readโ€ขUpdated November 2026

Short answer

If you want a serious gym in your hotel, STAY Wellbeing & Lifestyle Resort in Phuket is the standout, with a 1,000 mยฒ gym open 24 hours. Thanyapura, also in Phuket, is the pick for swimmers, runners and tennis players. Kamalaya and Absolute Sanctuary on Koh Samui suit a quieter, programme-led stay, REVฤชVลŒ in Bali lets you build your own active holiday, and BodyHoliday in St Lucia includes a daily treatment and classes in the rate.

Most hotel gyms are an afterthought: a treadmill, a cable machine and dumbbells that stop at 20 kg. A fitness resort is the opposite. The gym, the classes and the recovery facilities are the reason the place exists.

The six resorts below are upmarket places where training is central. They are not all the same, though. Some are built for lifting, some for endurance sport, and some for wellness programmes where exercise is one part of a wider reset. We have checked the details against each resort's own website, but facilities and programmes change, so confirm anything important before you book.

1. STAY Wellbeing & Lifestyle Resort, Phuket

Best for: people who want a proper gym and a full class timetable without leaving the resort.

STAY's gym, STAY Fit, is the main reason to book. It covers 1,000 mยฒ over three floors, is fitted out with Life Fitness equipment, and is open 24 hours. Group classes run every day and include yoga, Muay Thai, spinning, bootcamp and the resort's own Station 10 HIIT circuit. Personal training is available too.

Recovery is just as well covered. The spa, LeSpa, has an ice bath, floating therapy tanks and onsen-style pools, and the on-site STAY Well Clinic offers physiotherapy and cryotherapy. There are four pools and 162 suites and villas.

The resort sits between Rawai and Chalong in the south of Phuket. It is not on the beach, but it is a short drive from Soi Ta-iad, Phuket's famous Fitness Street, so you can mix resort training with sessions at the gyms and Muay Thai camps there.

2. Thanyapura, Phuket

Best for: swimmers, triathletes, runners and tennis players.

Thanyapura opened in 2012 in Thalang, in the north of the island, next to national parkland and about 15 minutes from the airport. It is closer to a training centre than a hotel. The facilities include a 50-metre Olympic-size pool, a 25-metre training pool, a 500-metre running track around a sports field, and six tennis courts, four of them indoors. There is also a weights and cardio gym, a Muay Thai ring, and studios for yoga, Pilates and spinning.

It runs coaching programmes, group classes and events through the year, including a triathlon series and a trail run, and has a health clinic and spa. The 114 rooms are split between the Pool Wing, close to the sports facilities, and the quieter Garden Wing. It also sells sports memberships, so you may share the facilities with local members.

3. Absolute Sanctuary, Koh Samui

Best for: a structured reset with exercise built in.

Absolute Sanctuary calls itself a wellness and longevity resort. It is a small, Mediterranean-style place with 38 rooms on a hillside in Bophut. For training, there is a fitness studio, a cycling studio, a Pilates reformer studio and a yoga centre, with classes such as Be Fit, Strength & Performance and Sports Recovery. A contrast therapy zone handles the recovery side.

Most guests come for a programme. Options include a Metabolic Detox Reset, Weight Management, Lifestyle Change and a 12-day signature programme. Food comes from its own healthy kitchen, Love Kitchen. Choose it if you want someone else to plan your days; look elsewhere if you mainly want a big weights room.

4. Kamalaya, Koh Samui

Best for: wellness programmes where movement is one part of a wider plan.

Kamalaya is one of the best-known wellness resorts in Asia, with a long list of industry awards. It has 76 rooms, suites and villas on the south coast of Koh Samui. Its programmes include Basic and Comprehensive Optimal Fitness and Structural Revival, which focuses on posture and alignment, alongside daily classes in Pilates, yoga, core fitness, Qi Gong and Tai Chi.

This is a place for coached, gentler training and recovery rather than heavy lifting. If a full gym matters to you, ask about the equipment before you book, or plan a few sessions at a local gym on the island.

5. REVฤชVลŒ Wellness Resort, Bali

Best for: building your own active holiday in a calm part of Bali.

REVฤชVลŒ is in Nusa Dua, Bali's quieter, resort-lined south-east coast. Its Fusion Fitness programme lets you design your own active schedule, and there is a daily MOVEลŒ class. When it opened, the resort described a dedicated fitness area set on around 8,000 mยฒ of land at the back of the property.

It is a good choice if you want to train once or twice a day and rest in between. For heavier lifting, Bali's best gyms are mostly on the west coast; our Bali gym guide covers them.

6. BodyHoliday, St Lucia

Best for: variety, watersports and not having to think about extras.

BodyHoliday sits on Cariblue Beach in the north of St Lucia and is built on four pillars: exercise, diet, beauty treatments and relaxation. Unusually, the rate includes a one-hour treatment on every full day, along with fitness classes, yoga, meditation and Tai Chi.

Beyond the wellness centre, the activity list is long: tennis, golf, archery, watersports, a sailing school and a PADI dive centre. It suits people who want to be active all day in many different ways, more than people who want a strict training block.

How to choose a fitness resort

  • Match it to how you train. A wellness resort with yoga and Pilates will frustrate a powerlifter; a sports resort with a 50-metre pool will thrill a triathlete. Decide what a good day of training looks like for you first.
  • Check the gym, not the brochure. Look at guest photos. Count the squat racks, check how heavy the dumbbells go, and see whether there are platforms for deadlifts.
  • Read what the rate includes. Gym and group classes are usually included; personal training, treatments and programmes usually are not.
  • Think about location. A resort away from the beach or town can mean taxis for everything else. That suits some people and not others.
  • Time it. Phuket and Koh Samui have different rainy seasons, so check the weather for your dates.

The cheaper alternative. If what you really want is a great gym, you do not have to pay for one in your room rate. Stay somewhere you like and buy a day pass or weekly pass at a strong local gym. In most of the places above, there are gyms with more equipment than any resort, for a fraction of the price. Our guide to finding a gym with a day pass abroad explains how.

The short version: STAY for lifting and classes, Thanyapura for endurance and racket sports, Absolute Sanctuary or Kamalaya for a programme-led reset, REVฤชVลŒ for a calm, self-directed active break, and BodyHoliday for the widest range of activities with the most included.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fitness resort?

A fitness resort is a hotel built around training and recovery rather than one with a small gym tucked in the basement. Expect a large, well-equipped gym, a daily timetable of classes, coaches, and usually a spa or recovery area. Some focus on hard training, others on wellness programmes such as weight management or stress, with exercise as one part.

What is the best fitness resort in Thailand?

It depends on how you train. For lifting and classes, STAY Wellbeing & Lifestyle Resort in Phuket has one of the biggest resort gyms in the country, open 24 hours. For swimmers, triathletes and tennis players, Thanyapura in Phuket has a 50-metre pool, a running track and six courts. For a quieter, programme-led stay, Kamalaya and Absolute Sanctuary on Koh Samui are better fits.

Are fitness resorts all-inclusive?

Rarely fully. Most include gym access and group classes in the room rate, then charge for personal training, spa treatments and specialist programmes. BodyHoliday in St Lucia is one exception that includes a daily treatment and classes. Always check what the rate covers before you compare prices.

Do I need to be fit to go to a fitness resort?

No. Classes are usually open to all levels, and most resorts let you choose how much you do. If you are a beginner, look for a resort with plenty of coached classes and personal training. If you are experienced, check the gym itself: the number of racks and platforms, the heaviest dumbbells and the machine brands.

Is a fitness resort worth the money?

If you want everything in one place, with the gym, classes, recovery and healthy food on site, yes. If you mainly want a good gym, you can often get the same training for less by staying in a normal hotel near a strong local gym and buying day passes. Phuket's Soi Ta-iad, for example, has several serious gyms within walking distance of each other.

Can non-guests use resort gyms?

Some do. Thanyapura sells sports memberships, and STAY is reported to sell gym and class passes to non-guests. Policies change, so contact the resort before you go.

Not staying at a fitness resort?

GymMaps finds the best gyms near any hotel, with day pass prices, real photos and the equipment each one has, so you get resort-level training wherever you stay.
