Short answer
Da Nang is one of the easiest training bases in South East Asia. Most travellers stay in An Thượng, the small tourist area by Mỹ Khê Beach, and every gym in this guide is under 10 minutes away by Grab: strength gyms, two CrossFit boxes, a Hyrox club, BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai, plus two free outdoor calisthenics spots on the beachfront. The airport is 15 minutes away, many Europeans get 45 days visa-free, and Kuala Lumpur is a 2 hour 40 minute border run. February to May is the best time to go.
Ask people where to go for a training trip in South East Asia and you'll hear Bali, Phuket and Chiang Mai. Da Nang rarely makes the list, and that's exactly why it's worth a look.
It's a proper city with a 10 km beach along its eastern edge, an airport in the middle of town, and a gym scene packed into a few kilometres a block or two back from the sand. Here are the gyms first, then everything else you need for the trip.

🏋️ Strength and bodybuilding gyms
Air-conditioned gyms with free weights, racks and machines, mostly on the east bank between the river and the beach. Some sit alongside yoga studios, which is handy if you want to stretch on rest days.
Pig Gym →
Đỗ Bá, on the edge of An Thượng · 2 min by Grab, or a short walk
The closest strength gym to the An Thượng grid, so it's the default for a lot of nomads staying there.
No Limits Horizon Wellness →
Võ Nguyên Giáp, on the beachfront · 8 min by Grab
On the beach road itself: train, then cross the road for a swim.
No Limits Fitness & Yoga →
Phạm Tu, An Hải · 7 min by Grab
Gym and yoga under one roof, near Phước Mỹ and north Mỹ Khê.
Black's Gym Center →
Trần Hưng Đạo, riverside An Hải · 5 min by Grab
A riverside option close to the Dragon Bridge end of the east bank.
Alpha Fitness & Yoga Center →
Hoa Hồng 1, riverside An Hải · 7 min by Grab
Gym and yoga in the streets just back from the river.
🔥 CrossFit and Hyrox
Two CrossFit boxes and a dedicated Hyrox club, which is more than many bigger cities have. Boxes usually take drop-ins, but message ahead for the class times and to say you're visiting.
CrossFit Harbour →
Trần Bạch Đằng · 5 min by Grab, 15 min on foot
The nearest box to An Thượng, right next door to Alliance BJJ, so it's easy to combine the two.
CrossFit Lotus →
Hồ Xuân Hương, Ngũ Hành Sơn · 6 min by Grab
At the southern end of the beach area, about 40 minutes' walk down the beachfront from the calisthenics park.
Engine Room: Hyrox Training Club →
Dương Khuê, Ngũ Hành Sơn · 4 min by Grab
A club built around Hyrox: the place to go if you've got a race coming up and want to keep your sled, wall ball and running blocks going while you travel.
🥊 BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai
Da Nang's fight scene is smaller than Phuket's or Bangkok's, but it covers the three disciplines most travellers want, and every gym is a short ride from the beach. Bring your own gi, rash guard, gloves and wraps.
Alliance Da Nang Brazilian Jiu Jitsu →
Trần Bạch Đằng · 5 min by Grab, 15 min on foot
Part of the Alliance BJJ network, so visiting Alliance students have a familiar home. Next door to CrossFit Harbour.
Fighter MMA DaNang →
Trần Quang Diệu, riverside An Hải · 6 min by Grab
MMA on the river side of the east bank.
Da Nang Muay Thai →
Khuê Mỹ Đông, Ngũ Hành Sơn · 7 min by Grab, 20 to 25 min on foot
A good option if you want to keep your striking going between trips to Thailand.
🤸 Outdoor calisthenics on Mỹ Khê
Two free, open-air calisthenics spots on Võ Nguyên Giáp, the beach road, about 400 metres apart. They're the best free training in the city: do your pull-up and dip work with the sea in front of you, then run or walk the promenade as your cardio.
There's no shade to speak of, so go at sunrise (the beach is already busy with locals exercising from around 5am) or after sunset.
Calisthenics Park Outdoor Gym →
Võ Nguyên Giáp, north Mỹ Khê · 8 min by Grab, 30 min walk along the beach
The northern of the two beachfront spots, near Phước Mỹ.
Calisthenics Gym (My Khe Beach) →
Võ Nguyên Giáp, Mỹ Khê
The second beachfront spot, a few minutes' walk south of the first.
Where to Stay: The Tourist Area Is Small, So Everything Is Close
Don't pick your hotel around a gym. Almost every traveller stays in An Thượng (also called Mỹ An), the tourist area one block back from Mỹ Khê Beach. That's where the food is for travellers: brunch cafés, smoothie bowls, international restaurants, co-working and bars, all within a few streets.
The area is so compact that it doesn't really matter which gym you choose. Every gym in this guide is under 10 minutes away by Grab, most are 5 or 6, and Pig Gym is a short walk. Stay where you want to eat and hang out, then ride to whichever gym suits your training.
🌴 An Thượng: where most people stay
A grid of small streets packed with guesthouses, boutique hotels, cafés and restaurants, with the beach at the end of every road. If you're not sure, stay here.
🏖️ Mỹ Khê beachfront: if you want a sea view
The hotel towers and serviced apartments along the beach road just north of An Thượng. A good pick for longer stays in an apartment, and the outdoor calisthenics spots are on the promenade outside. An Thượng's restaurants are a short walk or ride away.
Hội An: the old town is 40 to 50 minutes south by car and well worth a day or an evening. Some people base themselves there for the atmosphere, but for training you'll spend a lot of time in Grabs. Stay in Da Nang and visit.
Getting Your Bearings: Da Nang's Areas
Da Nang sits halfway down Vietnam's coast. The Hàn River splits it in two: the city centre and the airport are on the west bank, and the beach districts, with the tourist area and all the gyms in this guide, are on the east bank between the river and the sea. The Sơn Trà peninsula closes off the north end, and the beach runs south past the Marble Mountains towards Hội An.
The areas, north to south
Da Nang Airport (DAD): Right in the city, on the west side of the Hàn River. One of the closest airport-to-beach runs in Asia: 15 minutes to your hotel is normal.
Sơn Trà Peninsula: The forested headland north of the beach: the Lady Buddha at Linh Ứng Pagoda, monkeys, viewpoints and a hard hill ride or run.
Phước Mỹ & north Mỹ Khê: High-rise hotels and apartments facing the sea, with the two outdoor calisthenics spots on the beachfront here.
Mỹ Khê Beach: The main city beach: a long, wide stretch of sand with a promenade, seafood restaurants and the busiest part of the beachfront.
An Thượng (Mỹ An): The backpacker and digital nomad grid a block back from the sand: cafés, co-working, bars, and the most gyms within walking distance.
Hải Châu & the Dragon Bridge: The city centre on the west bank: Hàn Market, local food, river views, and the weekend fire show at the Dragon Bridge.
Ngũ Hành Sơn & Marble Mountains: Quieter beaches running south towards Hội An, resorts, and the Marble Mountains caves and pagodas.
Easy Steps: Why Da Nang Is So Walkable
If you track your steps, you'll like it here. The beach districts are flat, the grid in An Thượng is compact, and the beachfront promenade along Võ Nguyên Giáp and Trường Sa runs for kilometres with the sea on one side. An evening walk from An Thượng up to the calisthenics park and back is about 5.5 km; carry on south to CrossFit Lotus and you've covered another 3.4 km.
Walking times between the gyms
| Route | Distance | On foot |
|---|---|---|
| An Thượng → Alliance BJJ / CrossFit Harbour | 1.3 km | 15 min |
| An Thượng → Da Nang Muay Thai | 1.9 km | 20 to 25 min |
| An Thượng → Calisthenics Park (north Mỹ Khê) | 2.7 km | 30 min |
| Calisthenics Park → CrossFit Lotus, along the beach | 3.4 km | 40 min |
Walking times from Mapbox route data at an easy pace. It's hot, so allow more in the middle of the day and take water.
The pavements are better than in many South East Asian cities, but motorbikes do park on them, so the promenade is the best walk. Locals use it from before sunrise, and the light on the beach between 5 and 6am is worth getting up for. For more ideas, see our guide to staying consistent while you travel.
Getting Around Da Nang
📱 Grab
Grab is the main ride-hailing app and it's cheap. A car from the airport to Mỹ Khê is usually around 100,000 to 150,000 VND (roughly USD 4 to 6), and short hops around the beach area cost less. Grab Bike, a ride on the back of a motorbike, is cheaper again and quicker in traffic. Prices change with demand, and the app shows the fare before you book.
🚕 Taxis
Metered taxis are everywhere and also cheap. Use the app or a metered taxi from the official rank at the airport rather than agreeing a price with someone who approaches you.
🛵 Motorbikes
Renting a motorbike is common for longer stays, and it's how you get up the Sơn Trà peninsula on your own schedule. You need the right licence for your insurance to cover you, so check before you ride. For most people staying in An Thượng, walking and Grab are enough.
How long it takes to get around
| Route | Distance | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Airport → Hải Châu (city centre) | 3 km | 10 min |
| Airport → An Thượng | 5.5 km | 15 to 20 min |
| Airport → Mỹ Khê Beach | 6 km | 15 to 20 min |
| An Thượng → Fighter MMA (by car) | 2 km | 5 to 10 min |
| An Thượng → Da Nang Muay Thai (by car) | 2 km | 5 to 10 min |
| An Thượng → Marble Mountains | 6 km | 15 min |
| Mỹ Khê → Lady Buddha (Sơn Trà) | 9 km | 20 to 25 min |
| An Thượng → Hội An Old Town | 24 km | 40 to 50 min |
Times from Mapbox route data; allow extra at rush hour and in heavy rain. The airport is in the city, so the transfer is rarely more than 20 minutes.
Getting There: Flights From Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Bali
Da Nang International (DAD) has direct flights from most of the region's hubs, which makes it easy to slot into a longer trip around South East Asia.
Flight times to Da Nang
| From | Flight time | Service |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok (BKK / DMK) | About 1 h 40 min | Direct, several a day |
| Kuala Lumpur (KUL) | About 2 h 40 min | Direct, daily (VietJet) |
| Bali (DPS) | About 4 h 40 min | Direct, 4 a week (Indonesia AirAsia, since March 2026) |
| Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi | Short hops | The usual connection points from elsewhere |
Approximate times for direct flights. Schedules change by season, so check a booking site for the current timetable.
The Visa and Border Runs
🛂 45 days visa-free
Citizens of 24 countries can stay up to 45 days per entry without a visa. They include the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Japan and South Korea.
💻 90-day e-visa for everyone else
Any nationality, including the US, Australia and Canada, can apply online for an e-visa of up to 90 days. The government fee is about USD 25 for single entry or USD 50 for multiple entry, and processing usually takes around three working days. Apply through the official government portal, not a reseller that adds its own fee.
✈️ Border runs to Kuala Lumpur
If you're on the 45-day exemption and want to stay longer, Kuala Lumpur is the easy run. VietJet flies direct every day in about 2 hours 40 minutes, the fares are often low, and KL is a great city for a few days of training in its own right. Bangkok, at 1 hour 40 minutes, works just as well.
Check before you fly: Vietnam's entry rules have changed several times in the last few years. The 45-day exemption for the countries above currently runs until 2028. Check the latest rules for your passport before booking, and if you plan a long stay, a 90-day multiple-entry e-visa saves you the border runs entirely.
When to Go: Da Nang's Seasons
Central Vietnam has a different weather pattern from Thailand and Bali. The rain comes late in the year, from autumn into winter, which means Da Nang is at its best in spring and early summer.
☀️ February to May: the best time
Dry, sunny and lower humidity, before the summer heat. The sea is calm, and outdoor training is comfortable in the mornings and evenings.
🔥 June to August: hot and dry
The hottest months, regularly in the mid-30s °C. It's still dry and the beach is at its busiest with domestic holidaymakers. Train indoors in the middle of the day and keep the calisthenics park for sunrise.
🌧️ September to December: rainy season
Heavy rain and the risk of typhoons, which is highest around October and November. The sea can be rough and unsafe for swimming. Indoor gyms carry on as normal, and accommodation is cheaper, but keep your plans flexible.
Our take: Da Nang's best months line up with Bali's dry season and the start of Thailand's hottest stretch. That makes it a great spring stop on a longer trip: Thailand in the cool winter months, then Da Nang from February.
Da Nang vs Bali and Thailand for a Fitness Trip
Da Nang won't replace Phuket or Bangkok if you want to live at a fight camp, and it has fewer gyms than Canggu. But for a lot of people it's the better trip:
- Everything is close: a 15 minute airport transfer, and the gyms, beach, cafés and co-working all in one walkable strip.
- A real city beach: kilometres of sand and promenade for walking, running and swimming, without Canggu's traffic.
- Variety in a small area: strength gyms, CrossFit, Hyrox, BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai and outdoor calisthenics, mostly within a few kilometres.
- Cheap to get around: Grab rides that cost a couple of dollars, and food that's great value.
- Good connections: direct to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and now Bali, so it fits into a longer loop.
The trade-off: a smaller fight scene, a rainy season that falls in the European autumn, and fewer gyms overall. If you're a full-time Muay Thai fighter, Thailand is still the place. If you lift, do CrossFit or Hyrox, or train martial arts as a hobby, Da Nang is a strong choice.
Beyond the Gym: Active Things to Do
- Sơn Trà peninsula: the climb up to the Lady Buddha at Linh Ứng Pagoda and the roads beyond are a serious hill session by bike or on foot, with views back over the whole beach.
- Marble Mountains: steep stone steps, caves and pagodas 15 minutes south of An Thượng. A good active rest day.
- Sea swims: calm in spring and summer. Swim between the lifeguard flags; the sea gets rough from September.
- Hội An: 40 to 50 minutes south, for the old town, tailors and a change of scene.
💡 Tips for Training in Da Nang
- Train early or late: the beach is busy with locals exercising from 5am, and midday is hot all year.
- Message CrossFit boxes and martial arts gyms before your first class to check times and drop-in rates.
- Bring your own gi, rash guard, gloves and wraps for BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai.
- Carry some cash in dong: smaller gyms and street food may not take cards.
- Download Grab before you land; it's the easiest way out of the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Da Nang good for training?
Yes. The gyms are clustered in the beach districts on the east bank of the Hàn River, so from An Thượng or Mỹ Khê you can walk or take a short Grab to strength gyms, two CrossFit boxes, a Hyrox club, BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai. Two free outdoor calisthenics spots sit on the Mỹ Khê beachfront.
Where should I stay in Da Nang for the gyms?
Most travellers stay in An Thượng (also called Mỹ An), the small tourist area one block back from Mỹ Khê Beach, because that is where the cafés and restaurants are. You do not need to stay near a particular gym: every gym in this guide is under 10 minutes from An Thượng by Grab.
How long can I stay in Vietnam without a visa?
Citizens of 24 countries, including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the Nordic countries, Japan and South Korea, can stay 45 days visa-free. Everyone else, including Americans, Australians and Canadians, can get a 90-day e-visa online: about USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple entry. Rules change often, so check the official portal before you fly.
Can I do a border run from Da Nang?
Yes, and Kuala Lumpur is the easy one: VietJet flies direct daily in about 2 hours 40 minutes, and fares on this route are often low. Bangkok is about 1 hour 40 minutes. If you want to stay longer than 45 days without leaving, a 90-day multiple-entry e-visa is the simpler option.
When is the best time to visit Da Nang?
February to May: dry, sunny and not yet at peak heat. June to August is hot (often mid-30s °C) but still dry and the sea is calm. September to December is the rainy season, with typhoon risk highest around October and November.
How do I get around Da Nang?
Grab is the main app and it is cheap: the airport to Mỹ Khê is usually around 100,000 to 150,000 VND by car. Motorbike Grab rides are cheaper still. Much of the beach area is flat and walkable, and the beachfront promenade is the best walk in the city.
Is Da Nang a good alternative to Bali or Thailand for a fitness trip?
For many people, yes. You get a long city beach, a compact and walkable gym district, a ten-minute airport transfer and lower day-to-day costs than Canggu or Phuket. It has fewer gyms and a smaller fight scene than Thailand, so it suits strength, CrossFit and Hyrox athletes and martial arts hobbyists more than full-time fighters.
Are there outdoor calisthenics parks in Da Nang?
Yes. There are two outdoor calisthenics spots on Võ Nguyên Giáp, the beachfront road along Mỹ Khê, about 400 metres apart. They are free and open-air, so go early morning or after sunset to avoid the heat.
